Mit Taler wird das Ziel verfolgt, ein digitales Pendant zu Bargeld zu schaffen, das sich durch Datenschutz und Datenminimierung auf Grundlage von Prinzip und Design auszeichnet und neben den vorteilhaften Eigenschaften von Bargeld (Anonymität, Nichtabstreitbarkeit und Finalität der Zahlungen, einfache, schnelle, unkomplizierte und hochverfügbare Transaktionen) weitere sinnvolle Funktionen und technische Sicherheitsmerkmale aufweist wie z.B. Coin-Attribute (Altersbeschränkungen) oder Kopierbarkeit der Coins und Wallets mit Backup-Funktion. Darüber hinaus ermöglicht Taler neue Geschäftsmodelle, z.B. Micropayments (Centbeträge und sogar Bruchteile von Cents können kostengünstig überwiesen werden).
